The Territorial Police in KMP East and Mukono has launched a serious manhunt for a group of five thieves who broke into St. John S.S. located at Kyawambago village, Nakisunga Sub-county, in Mukono district.
The thieves reportedly attacked and killed two local guards who were manning the school premises before they went on to steal money and other property that was being kept at the school.
According to Fred Enanga the police spokesperson, preliminary findings indicated that the thugs entered the school premises on the 27.03.2022, at around 2am while armed with pangas.
Enanga said they rounded up three students of the school in S.2, S.4. and S.6 and tied them up. They also tied the two watchmen at the school and killed them instantly.
“The body of Kanyole Patrick, a 58 year old local guard, was found near the school play ground, with sisal rope that had tightly gripped his neck. Both hands were tied and a deep cut on his forehead,” Enanga said.
“The body of his colleague, Hyuha Fred, was found inside the sentry box with a deep cut on his head and abrasions around the neck area, showing signs of strangulation.”
He revealed that after the thieves had killed the two watchmen, they went on to break into some of the offices including that of the headteacher and the bursar and stole among other items, money that was being kept there.
“The thugs after killing them, went and broke into the offices of the Headteacher and Bursar. An unspecified amount of items were stolen including money.
“They also dismantled and stole the school DVR for the CCTV camera. Exhibits of evidential value where recovered from the scene. Efforts in place to identify the culprits and bring them to book,” Enanga revealed.
He however, encouraged all schools to pick a leaf from such attacks and boost their security systems in a bid to ensure the safety of their property, students and staff.
“Providing a safe learning environment is of paramount importance to education providers. Therefore, all school are encouraged to ensure the safety of students and staff and the security of the school infrastructure.
For instance, the use of CCTV cameras, access controls, armed security guards, intruder alarms and raised wall perimeters. All these different elements contribute to the overall safety of the school.”
