Police in North Kyoga Region, Lira City, have arrested three people for trying to bribe a UNEB scout in order to influence the upcoming Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE).
The suspects are Odongo George, the Director of Atura Community Day Primary School; Ekut Simon, 32, a former teacher at the same school; and Awoko Lavoiser, 26, a teacher at St. Gracious Primary School in Barapwo, Lira City West Division.
According to police, the trio tried to offer a UNEB scout from Lira UGX 1,000,000 as a bribe. The scout had been assigned to supervise the PLE in Oyam District. The money was meant to influence the conduct of the national exams, which start tomorrow.
Police, acting on a tip-off, arrested the suspects at Garden Hotel in Lira City and recovered the money. The cash has been taken as evidence.
Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects will soon appear in court. They will be charged under Section 26 (1)(g) of the UNEB Act, CAP 259, which provides for up to five years in prison, a fine of UGX 20 million, or both, upon conviction.
UNEB Executive Director Mr. Dan Odongo earlier on warned the public and all those involved in exam supervision not to engage in any acts that promote examination malpractice.
He warned that UNEB is working closely with the Uganda Police and other security agencies, who will not hesitate to arrest and charge anyone trying to compromise the credibility of the national examinations, regardless of their position.
