The Uganda National Examinations Board – UNEB has announced that selection of Senior Five students will commence on February 23 and 24 at UMA Exhibition hall.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni who also doubles as the First Lady. She said students joining senior five will report to school on March 6, 2023.
Janet Museveni made the remarks during the release of the 2022 Uganda Certificate of Examinations results on Thursday. 345,695 candidates including 173,761 males and 171,934 females sat for the examination compared to 330,592 candidates who appeared for the examination in 2020.
Speaking out on the general performance of the students, Museveni expressed concern on the increasing cases of absenteeism that has seen many students even after they have registered for the exams, miss out on sitting their finals.
She however commended all responsible parties including parents, teachers and government for ensuring the exam period was a success amidst challenges posed by both the Covid19 and the latest Ebola epidemic.
“Over 30,000 girls do not transition to complete the next level of education after PLE. Consequently as the Min of Education we find it necessary to provide an explanation to the nation regarding this challenge.
But I want to thank God for his faithfulness in taking our children through a very difficult time of the COVID-19 pandemic and Ebola outbreak and enabling them to sit for UCE,” Museveni said.
In addition, she noted the Ministry also recognizes the poor performance in subjects including Biology which has been recurring through subsequent releases of the UCE results.
“This matter is currently being addressed through curriculum reviews,” Janet added.
Meanwhile, the State Minister for Higher Education, John .C. Muyingo also raised caution of many students in continuing classes who are yet to report to school for the new academic year.
“A number of Ugandans of school-going age have not yet returned to school for this new academic year. I appeal to parents and all local leaders to ensure that these children go to school,” Muyingo appealed.
