The Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Hon Ruth Nankabirwa has tipped Ugandans to adopt healthier lifestyles in a bid to fight the burden of contracting non communicable diseases.

Nankabirwa made the remarks on Sunday as the Country commemorated the National Day of Physical Activity in the fight against Non-communicable diseases organized by the Ministry of Health.

The Minister who spoke on behalf of President Museveni said the burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) including cancer, high blood pressure, heart diseases, and diabetes among Ugandans is increasing, accounting for 71% of all global deaths each year. In Uganda they are responsible for 40% of all death.

She however, said it has been scientifically proven that regular exercises can help curb on the effectiveness of most of these NCDs.

Nankabirwa urged that amidst their busy schedules, people should spare time and exercise their bodies and keep fit to reduce on the risk of contracting life threatening diseases.

“The good news is that there are cheap but effective options available to prevent these diseases. Physical activity is one of the proven ways. Unfortunately, Ugandans are becoming increasingly physically inactive. A number of us who live in the cities are very inactive,” Nankabirwa said.

“Dear Ugandans, lets adopt healthier lifestyles to prevent NCDs so that we remain healthy, productive and we enjoy life. To act as an example,I led an 8km walk and every year we will be walking together. This is symbolic, you need to exercise everyday as advised by health workers,” she added.

Meanwhile, the National Day of Physical Activity is intended to raise awareness on the importance of regular physical activities to having good health.
