MoH suspends door to door polio vaccination in Kampala, Mukono over Ebola

As the second phase of the door to door vaccination for the polio disease commences, the health ministry has said the campaign will not be held in Ebola struck districts.

In a statement announcing the directive, the health Minister, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng said the vaccination campaign is targeting up to 8.7 million children under the age of five.

She said for the excluded districts, new dates will be communicated at a later time when the vaccination can be conducted.

“This will take place from 4-10 November 2022 however, the campaign will not take place in Mubende, Kassanda, Wakiso, Mukono and Kampala City due to the ongoing Ebola,” Aceng said.

This however, comes a time when the Ebola virus has hit a centre stage in terms of infections in the country in the last one week.

I’mAddressing the media on the current state of virus on Wednesday, Aceng said 35 days since it’s outbreak, 109 have so far tested positive for the virus. Of these, 30 have succumbed, 34 recovered while 45 are still under treatment.

Ebola is a killer disease caused by the virus. It is spread through contact with bats and monkeys and also through contact with infected persons.

A person infected with Ebola is not contagious before the symptoms appear. The incubation period is two to 21 days.

Among other signs and symptoms, a person suffering from Ebola presents high fever, abdominal pain, joint or body pain, difficulty in swallowing, headache, nausea, vomiting, and rash
