Kampala businessman arrested for selling unlicenced fuel

The Territorial Police in Kampala Metropolitan North has arrested and detained a Kampala businessman for selling unlicenced fuel products.

The city businessman identified as Bangi Stephen is a 38-year-old resident, of Quata zone, Kanyanya ward, Kawempe division, in Kampala district.

According to Fred Enanga the police spokesperson, on September 19, 2022, officers raided his home and found him with 30,000 litres of diesel, that was parked in jerrycans.

He was also found ferrying more fuel in a mobile fuel tanker, registration number, UBG, 128E, and charged with dealing in Petroleum Products without a trading license.

Enanga mentioned upon interrogation, the suspect admitted to dealing in diesel fuel, without a licence and in a non-gazetted facility, that is within his compound.

“There were no fire fighting measures, and no escape route, incase of a fire outbreak or disaster. It also serious environmental related threats to the neighborhood,” Enanga measured.

He said the fact that an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) was not done, also makes it difficult, to establish whether, there are any spill-over effects, in the neighborhood or not.

He said the police investigation teams are awaiting additional reports from NEMA and Ministry of Energy before they can forward the suspect’s file to the DPP.

Enanga however, cautioned all other illegal dealers in Petroleum products, without appropriate licences, to ensure they obtain them, so as to remain in business, on legitimate grounds.

“We advise the public not to consume or buy such fuel products from unauthorized outlets, due to the potential of consuming adulterated fuel that may cause damage to your motor vehicles, motorcycles or other machines,” he tipped.
