Rescue teams on Monday recovered six more bodies from the mudslides in Masugu Village, Buluganya Parish, Buluganya Sub-county, Bulambuli district, pushing the death toll to 28. The tragedy struck the eastern Ugandan district following days of relentless heavy rains.
The newly identified victims are:
Masuba Emmanuel, 45
Magomu Paul, 3
Bududu Daniel, 3
Kissa Aaron, 1.5 years
Wabuyanga Jackline, 5
Nabukonde Beth, 52
“All victims were residents of Masugu Village,” the Police confirmed in a statement, adding that rescue operations are ongoing. Joint efforts by the Police, local community members, the Office of the Prime Minister, and the Red Cross are continuing to search for more bodies.
The incident has prompted renewed warnings from authorities about the dangers posed by severe weather conditions currently affecting the country. In recent months, heavy rains have caused widespread flooding, mudslides, and destruction, resulting in significant loss of life and property.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kituuma Rusoke, in a statement issued on Monday, called for heightened public vigilance. He urged residents to avoid flood-prone areas, remain alert, and ensure that emergency contact numbers for relevant agencies are readily accessible.
