The Ministry of Health Thursday announced that 12 more individuals have succumbed to the Covid19 pushing the death tally to 3,325 cases.
The Ministry also announced 1,759 new cases from tests done in the previous 24 hours pushing the cumulative confirmed cases in the country to 150,301 cases.
As of Thursday, the test positivity rate in Uganda lies at 20.3% with 538 active cases admited at different health centres. According to the health ministry, so far, 98,601 individuals have since recovered from the virus countrywide.
The new figures now reveal that there has been a surge in Covid19 infections in the country in recent weeks.
While delivering his end of year speech to the nation, President Museveni said the country’s progress in containing the virus will hugely dictate whether a full reopening of the economy can go on or not.
Museveni made the remarks while announcing the partial reopening of the economy. Among others, he directed schools and institutions of learning to resume operations from January 10.
“The pre-primary, primary and secondary schools to be opened to learners starting on January, 10. Sports events and cinema halls will also be allowed to open but with SOPs,” Museveni made the remarks during a televised address to the Nation to mark the end of the year 2021.
On other sectors including the bars and concerts, he said these will be allowed to operate two weeks after the opening of schools.
On the curfew, he said this will also be lifted two weeks after schools have resumed but warned the boda bodas will continue stopping at 7pm.
The president however, raised that all these measures can be reversed once government notices a rapid surge in Covid19 infections.
